Stampede Clinches Playoff Spot

     The San Angelo Stampede Express clinched a spot in the Indoor Football League playoffs with an 82-75 victory against the Corpus Christi Hammerheads at Citgo Field in Robstown on Saturday night.     The game was a must-win situation for San Angelo to get into the postseason.     The Stampede (5-8) will open the playoffs on the road against the Abilene Ruff Riders on July 18. Before that, they have a regular-season finale at home against El Paso at 7:05 p.m. Saturday night at the San Angelo Coliseum.     In the win against the Hammerheads, Stampede quarterback Sonny Cumbie was 18-of-28 passing for 215 yards and seven touchdowns.      In Saturday night's home and regular-season finale, the Stampede took the field fired up on defense, forcing the Generals to a fourth-and-18 situation that to a missed 31-yard field goal attempt.     On the Stampede’s first play from scrimmage, quarterback Sonny Cumbie connected with Kaylon Price for an electrifying 39-yard gain.     Voncarie Owens would sprint into the end zone on the very next play, giving the Stampede the early 7-0 lead.     El Paso responded, taking just three plays to even the score at 7-7.     After a crucial fourth-down play, where a Cumbie pass slipped through the hands of the normally automatic Bobby Chase, El Paso capitalized, with the help of a San Angelo penalty, to take a 14-7 lead at the...
